Ram Revilla's brother RJ arrested!

A few days ago, it was news that Ram Revilla (Ramgen Jose Bautista in real life), a Filipino actor, son of former Senator Ramon Revilla Sr. and half-brother of Bong Revilla Jr., was murdered at his own home by men in bonnet.

The victim was gunned and stabbed along with his girlfriend Janelle Manahan. There was no indication of  the motive thievery as nothing in the household was stolen.

It was later found out that disagreement over the P1-million monthly allowance from their father, Ramon Revilla Sr. was the motive, which was plotted by two of his own younger siblings, according to police investigators.

The plot thickened for the showbiz and politics Bautista-Revillas, with the victim, suspect, and witness-turned-suspect all in the same family, police said. Ramon Joseph "RJ" Bautista, 18, was arrested on the national highway in Bacoor, Cavite province, at around 11:30 pm on Monday and was tagged as the mastermind of the murder of his own elder brother.

RJ Bautista, a model and business administration student of Enderun Colleges in Taguig City, was arrested by police shortly after leaving the wake of his slain brother in the town of Imus. He was in a black SUV accompanied by some siblings when arrested, according to Senior Police Superintendent Billy Beltran.

Four other suspects, including his sister, Ma. Ramona Belen Bautista, 22, are being hunted, Beltran said.

Charges of murder and frustrated murder were filed on Tuesday afternoon against RJ Bautista for the death of his brother and the wounding of the latter's girlfriend, Janelle Manahan, who is still in critical condition in a hospital in Muntinlupa City.

The other suspects were identified as Norwin de la Cruz, one alias Bryan, and one alias Glaiza.

It was Ramgen Bautista, the eldest of the nine children of Revilla Sr. and Genelyn Magsaysay, who handled the P1-million allowance, told the police investigators.

The investigators said that the allowance was intended to cover the monthly expenses of Ramgen Bautista and his siblings — Ramona, Ma. Rachelle Anne, Ma. Regielyn, Ramon Joshua, RJ, Raphael Julius, Reuben Jesse and Ma. Ramblyn Gabriel.

Their mother has a separate allowance, the investigators said, adding that the money angle surfaced after Ramona Bautista's earlier statement that she was abducted by the killers turned out to be a lie.

In fact, the investigators said, Ramona Bautista was just in BF Subdivision in Parañaque City, where the family lives.

She was included in the charge sheet because it appeared that her previous statement that she was abducted by the gunmen after her brother's murder and then abandoned in Las Piñas City was part of the plan. Beltrain said.
"Investigation shows that the van abduction that Ramona claimed was just a cover-up, because three witnesses saw that RJ and Ramona left the subdivision gate within minutes of each other."
Beltran said that shortly before midnight on Friday, Ramona Bautista knocked on her brother's bedroom door and pretended to borrow a video camera to give way to the waiting masked suspect wielding a gun fitted with a silencer.

"That's why the house helpers and assistants at home did not hear any of the shots when it happened," Beltran said.

Ramgen sustained 16 stab wounds and one gunshot wound in various parts of Ramgen Bautista's body, according to the autopsy report. Manahan was stabbed twice in both sides of her chest and was shot in the jaw.

Police said RJ Bautista was identified as the mastermind by Roel Puzon, a witness who was part of the murder plot but not of the execution.

RJ Bautista planned the killing and is the principal suspect by inducement for hiring two professional gunmen, namely Michael Jay Cruz Altea and Roy Francis Tolisoro, to execute the plot, the Parañaque police's Task Force Ramgen said.

Altea and Tolisoro were arrested on Monday morning in San Dionisio, Parañaque. Along with RJ Bautista, they were taken at 2:30 pm Tuesday to the Parañaque Prosecutors' Office, where the charges were heard by Assistant City Prosecutor Leah Roma.

The task force is headed by the Investigation Unit head, Chief Inspector Enrique Sy. The arrests were made by the Intelligence Unit head, Chief Inspector Fergen Torred.

Beltran said politics, love triangle, and robbery had been ruled out as motives, with the new development pointing to the personal motive.

He said there appeared to be a financial feud among the siblings over their allowance.

Torred said the gunmen had been promised P200,000 for the killing but that they received only P19,000 as down payment to buy the gun.

"Our investigation showed that they conspired to kill Ramgen but didn't succeed on their first try. The group met and rescheduled, which led to the murder on October 28," Torred said.

Witness Puzon said the group had initially planned to stage the attack on October 12 but Ramgen woke up and the murder had to be called off.

He said the group met again on October 14 and 17 and agreed to strike on October 28.

Beltran said the witness went to the police because he was disturbed by his conscience after hearing news of the murder. Police said Puzon's statements corroborated the testimonies of their other witnesses.

Puzon said Altea was the assigned hitman. But police have yet to establish who shot Ramgen Bautista and Manahan on October 28 because the gunmen were masked.

Revilla Sr., known to his family as "Don Ramon," was taken to St. Luke's Medical Center in Taguig City at 2:30 pm Tuesday following a fever and an elevated blood pressure that he had been suffering since Monday night, according to Alde Pagulayan, the family's spokesperson.

Pagulayan said family members were shocked by the tagging of RJ and Ramona Bautista as suspects.

"The family is distraught, shattered, shocked. We are dealing with a lot of things. First, we were grieving for Ramgen, then this came up. It's just too much," Pagulayan said.

In a statement, Senator Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr., Ram Revilla's half-brother, also expressed the family's shock over the developments.

"We call on Task Force Ramgen to make sure that the result of the investigation would not lead to irreparable damage to the innocent, especially to their family members," the senator said, adding:
"We will not believe that RJ had anything to do with it until it is proven beyond reasonable doubt."
Revilla Jr., called on investigators to examine the credibility of the other suspects who had tagged RJ Bautista. "The statements should be validated, not taken on face value alone," he said.

Revilla Sr., a former actor, is said to have fathered at least 80 children.

He had seven children with his wife Azucena, who died in 1998. They are Revilla Jr., Bacoor Mayor Strike Revilla, film producer Andrea Bautista-Ynares, and Marlon, Rowena, Princess, and Diane.

In an interview last December, Revilla Jr. said he had met at least 40 of his half-siblings.

In 2007, Revilla Sr. left samples of his DNA with the National Bureau of Investigation so that anybody who would claim to be his child after he dies could be tested.

He said his daughter Andrea was keeping a list of his children, which at the time numbered far less than 100.

Muammar Gaddafi's Execution

muammar gaddafi execution
When Muammar Gaddafi was captured and killed, the world cheered, but only few really knew who he was, and what he had done to deserve such a fate. Perhaps, to the broad masses, he was a tyrant, a dictator, and a mass murderer. That was what the Western superpowers and the rebels want us to believe. Yes, he had made terrible mistakes in the past, but this does not negate the fact that he also did something good for the Libyan people. Because of him, Libya rose into a powerful country.

In my personal humble opinion, the Libyan leader should have been tried before executed. His execution only spurs speculation that there was something the rebels didn't want the world to know. In other words, his immediate execution was meant to "silence him."

Here is the Muammar Muhammad Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi's final moments before he was brutally killed by the Libyan rebels.

Gaddafi was found hiding in a hole in the ground and had said "Don't shoot, don't shoot" to the men who grabbed him.

His capture followed within minutes of the fall of Sirte. The once proud Libyan leader who decorated himself in fabulous suits now looks like a beggar. He was mauled and spat on and was put into the hood of a vehicle, where the bloodstained deposed leader pleaded for his life. Moments later, he was dragged into the ambulance, and the Libyan leader was no more. Gaddafi endured physical injuries from the mauling, but what took his life was a gunshot wound in the abdomen, and on the head.

Now, here's a question to all. What's the difference between Libya ruled by a tyrant and Libya ruled by barbarians?

Claudine Barretto and Raymart Santiago on the brink of separation?

Claudine Barretto and Raymart Santiago
I'm not an avid fan of Showbiz, but one of the catching topics you can hear from women gossips recently is about Claudine Barretto and Raymart Santiago's alleged separation, or was it just a rumor? Anyways let's delve into the story...

There had been stories circulating that Barretto have had extra-marital affair with a friend of her husband's, Martin Castro. This was, of course, one of the old controversial topics that sprung from actress Angelica Panganiban. Barretto denied this and accused the actress of maliciously spreading lies about her.

Barretto was also romantically linked with businessman Atong Ang, whom she said she only knew through one of her sisters-in-law. She added that Ang, being Castro's godfather, volunteered to help them solve her marital misunderstanding.

And the recent rumor to come out is that she had a romantic relationship with Senator Jose "Jinggoy" Estrada. Barretto, however, swore she wasn't close to the actor-politician and just happened to attend a party he hosted with some of her friends.

Senate President  Pro-Tempore Jinggoy Estrada also speaks out his side, a few days after rumors sprouted.
"Sa'n lumabas ang balita? Ayoko na patulan 'yan, tsismis lang 'yan!"
Translated as: "Where did that news came from? I don't want to entertain that, it's only a rumor!"

Senator Estrada said all these are purely gossips and definitely untrue, thus he does not want to get affected by such baseless contentions.

Prior to this, it was also said that Jinggoy and Claudine met in America, when they concurrently took a vacation last April.

These would have been all rumors, but it was reported that on October 25, Claudine was seen losing her composure in a bank after being told that the money she was about to withdraw had been moved by another party.

In a joint statement, the show biz couple said: "We are still together. We have not separated. We love each other and we both value and cherish our marriage and relationship. Any issues that we may have are private and do not detract from, nor diminish, the strength of our marriage."

The statement avoided any mention of the bank incident. But according to a TV report, Barretto went to a bank on Quezon Avenue, Quezon City at noon with her lawyer Agnes Maranan to withdraw an undisclosed amount of money. Over half an hour later, they discovered that the money was no longer available and was taken through an inter-branch withdrawal.

It wasn't clear why Claudine Barretto was accompanied by a lawyer, although an entertainment columnist, quoting unidentified sources, had said that the actress sensed something wrong upon getting home from a TV taping session, and after finding her husband and all of his vehicles gone. She immediately contacted her lawyer and rushed to the bank to withdraw P5 million.

The presence of a TV news crew led by "24 Oras" show biz reporter Nelson Cantas also raised speculations. It was asked what he was doing there at the same time Barretto was breaking down, Cantas told the media that it was Barretto herself who called him up and told him to proceed to the bank, which is near the GMA 7 studios.

The TV camera captured Barretto in a foul mood inside the bank. When she came out, she tearfully told the news crew to ask her lawyer about what happened.

Maranan questioned the timing of the money's withdrawal by another party – presumably Santiago. "It was withdrawn at the time we were asking to withdraw it." the lawyer said. "We were here for more than 30 minutes. I was able to confirm from the teller that the funds were still there; and then suddenly, about 30 minutes later, wala na yung funds (the funds were gone)."

The money was supposed to come from Barretto and Santiago's joint bank account, from which either spouse could withdraw separately.

On October 27, Barretto told GMA News TV's "Showbiz Exclusives" that she was able to speak with the bank's branch manager, whom she accused of hiding the money from her. "Yung pera ko nawala. Hindi binigay (My money was gone, it wasn't given)... In a span of five minutes na nandun, biglang nawala, (that it was there, it suddenly disappeared)," Barretto said. "Hinanap ko siya (I look for him - the branch manager), biglang nagtago sa CR (he suddenly hid in the comfort room)."

Maranan, on the same TV program, said there had been a bank transaction at 12:45 p.m. "This moved the fund, but I was not told kung saan na-move (if where it was moved)." It's still unclear whether Barretto would be able to get the money back.

The couple's joint statement according to Inquirer said: "In recent days, there have been numerous negative rumors about our marriage and our relationship, all of which have caused us, our children, and our families undue stress, strain, and unnecessary tension. We ask that the public allow us to deal with our minor concerns without the glare and glee of media speculation that only hurt us and those we love."

The couple added: "We are deeply committed to our two children (Sabina, 7, Santino, 4), whom we love unconditionally. As concerned and devoted parents, we shall zealously protect their privacy, and their right to be untouched by malice and gossip."

The Santiagos then pleaded with the public to respect the rights of their children, who are innocent... unjustly harmed by the baseless gossip. They added that they hope the joint statement would settle and lay to rest all questions about the couple.

Bermuda Triangle truth revealed

The Bermuda Triangle, with boundaries covering the Straits of Florida, the Bahamas, the entire Caribbean Islands area, and the Atlantic east to the Azores, this region became known as the site of the disappearances of multiple ships and aircraft.

There have been many stories surrounding the mysterious region, stories such as UFO abduction, magnetic anomalies, and technology left behind by the lost city of Atlantis, although none of them has proof to support it.

The very phrase "Bermuda Triangle" has appeared only recently. It was coined by a fan of Spiritualism and esoteric Vincent Gaddis in 1964. By this toponym he meant an area located between the island of Puerto Rico, the Florida coast and Bermuda. According to the famous mystic of the last century, this area of the Atlantic became notorious due to the fact that hundreds of ships and aircraft disappeared there. Some ships, however, were found later, but without their crews and passengers. All these made Gaddis suggests that there was some anomaly in this area. However, he was not the first one to express this idea. In 1950, an American journalist Alexander Jones wrote an article about the mysterious disappearances of ships in this region. He called the region Sea Devil. Yet, the Bermuda Triangle acquired real popularity in 1974, when Charles Berlitz, a popularizer of Science, published a book under the same title where he collected descriptions of various mysterious disappearances in the area. The book immediately became a bestseller, and as a result, the mysterious and dangerous Sea Devil became known to the entire world. After that, different groups of scientists engaged in searching for reasons to explain these disappearances.

However, over time, the skeptics slowly gained the upper hand over amateur mystics. No anomalies in this part of the ocean were found, and the U.S. Coast Guard has issued several reports according to which the disappearances of ships in the Bermuda Triangle did not occur more frequently than in other regions of the ocean, and they occurred mainly due to storms. Historians, digging in the archives, found that the area since the discovery of America was very often visited by various vessels, including that of the pirates. Until the second half of the 20th century, sailors made no mention of it as a mysterious place where ships were constantly perishing. Persnickety journalists analyzed Berlitz's book and found that most of the facts presented by the writer were not entirely true, and some were just made up. And so it would seem that those who perpetrated the story only did it to make money.

Kim Kardashian files for divorce

Kim Kardashian (Kimberly Noel "Kim" Kardashian), an American businesswoman, socialite, television personality, model, and actress, officially filed for divorce from NBA player husband Kris Humphries.

Kardashian began dating the NBA player Kris of the New Jersey Nets in October 2010. They became engaged in May 2011, and Married on August 20, 2011 in Montecito, California. It was reported that Kardashian and Humphries would make $17.9 million from the nuptials, and that they paid nothing of the $20 million costs associated with it. At least, three $20,000 Vera Wang gowns and $400,000 worth of Perrier Jouet champagne were given free, as were invitations from Lehr & Black estimating $10,000 and $750,000 for catering for the 500 guests at the reception.

After just 72 days of marriage, Kardashian filed for divorce from Humphries on October 31, 2011, citing irreconcilable differences.

Here's a video of the couple having a fight back in Thursday night (October 27). They were seen arguing in Kardashian's car after leaving Izakaya restaurant in Hollywood. At one point, Kris was seen getting out of his beloved's car in a huff.

While Kim wore a $1,930 lamb wool gilet by Jahaanara, Kris wore jeans, trainers, hoodie and cap worn backwards.

They arrived in separate cars, but the atmosphere turned even more toxic inside the luxury sedan. Kris can be seen arrogantly holding his chin up, while Kim responds with an angry hand gesture and a death stare.

Moments later, Kris exists her car, and how he eventually got home was unknown.

Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries fight before the divorce.

Kim Kardashian says in a statement:
"After careful consideration, I have decided to end my marriage. I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision. I had hoped this marriage was forever but sometimes things don't work out as planned. We remain friends and wish each other the best."
Kim's sister Khloe took to Twitter to defend Kim's decision, saying:
"Reading some these comments are so hurtful. I'm grateful for our fans who understand and are being respectful. Hate is disgusting. Love is everything."

"Thank God for family. We are strong and we will only become closer! I love YOU."
In his own statement, Humphries claims to be "devastated" and willing to do whatever it takes to save the marriage.

Origin of Halloween

It's fun celebrating Halloween, but do you guys know where did the celebration originated or do you even have any clue as to why it is being celebrated? For the common average mind, it doesn't matter so as long as we can have fun, but for those who are curious... let's find out...

Halloween is a joyful yet eerie time that is being celebrated a few weeks after the colorful festivals of autumn and a few weeks before the deepest night of the year. It has been celebrated world-wide as All Hallows, Hallowe'en or All Saints Day (1st of November to some Christians). Halloween is a time of ghosts, demons, jack o' lanterns, witches, ghouls, rattling bones, monsters, frightening stories and tricks. It is a time for enjoying the generous fruits of Nature: apples, nuts, corn, and the most common - pumpkins, and more. Houses are adorned with scary decorations, and huge pumpkins that illumine the night. There's even a competition with prizes for the most scariest house. People dressed themselves in hideous and frightening costumes; friends and relatives gather to celebrate and children break the coldness of the coming winter, harvesting treats or tricks.

However, the truth of the matter is that Halloween had lost much of its meaning, although it still remind us of the existence of a time beyond the ordinary and profane: a time of magic and sacredness. Halloween is actually a secular holiday, a celebration conducted by some Pagans. It is the direct descendant of one of the most important days in the Celtic calendar: SAMHAIN.

About the Celtic Calendar

The Celtic year was divided by both solar and lunar festivals. The solar festivals marked the Sun's path: at its zenith on the Summer solstice, at its nadir on the Winter solstice, and at the two median points on the equinoxes. The Lunar festivals, called Fire Festivals, were the most essential in the Celtic calendar. They were, to a certain extent, related to agricultural events, and celebrated on the full moon. Hence the 4 cross-quarter days were in-between times, which exact day of celebration was determined by where the full moon fell within that month. Samhain and Beltain were the two major festivals since they divide the year into Winter and Summer, the dark and the light seasons.

The four lunar festivals were:

Samhain (October 31st) - This was the Celtic New Year, the most important festival of the wheel.
Imbolc/Oimelc (February 1st) - The "Candle festival", marking the middle of winter.
Beltain (May 1st) - The "Flower Festival", marking the first day of Celtic Summer.
Lugnassadh (August 1st) - The "Grain festival", marking the middle of Summer.

Significance

To the Celts, sacred landscapes (stones, groves, caves, mountains, springs, etc.) as well as sacred times marked special "access points" to the Otherworld, the non-physical realm considered as real and tangible as the physical. The Druids, priests and sages of the Celts, were the ones who held the keys of these special doors. The Celtic culture was referred to as 'Twilight Peoples' by numerous writers. Such a word only fits them because clearly, both the race and its priests revered the in-between 'flux states' of the world, thinking them a direct doorway - an emanation from the ghostly realms of the spirit. Even their choices of celebration days within the natural calendar year were those 'in-between' times - the cross-quarter days which were the points of greatest inequality or imbalance. The Druids knew that such "uneven times" were more prone to produce consciousness alteration (i.e. Otherworld access) than the "balanced times" of the Spring and Autumn Equinoxes, paired with their divisors.

To better understand this concept of "balance and imbalance", note that the Celts view life as a dynamic spiral expressed through the constant pulse of Nature. where Life springs from Death, Light from Darkness. The triptych "Life-Death-Rebirth", cornerstone of the Celtic view of the world is represented in the Triscale, a symbol that expresses the ideal motion of cycles within the world of form -unfolding ever-outward- growing, always returning to the same point, yet on a slightly higher level... Rebirth.

The Otherworld and the Underworld

As Samhain was the beginning of the Celtic year, it closed a cycle and opened a new one. At this moment of the year, the veil between the visible and the invisible worlds grew most thin, allowing both realms to communicate. The boundaries between the living and the dead, the ancestors, the gods, the heroes... fades away, as did the borders between past, present, and future. The non-physical realm was at the same time celestial and terrestrial, referred to as the Otherworld and the Underworld.

The Otherworld is related to Eternity and best evoked by Caitlin Matthrews:
"Perhaps more than any other people, the Celts have always cherished the country of their true home - the Otherworld. It is the source of their wisdom, the place of their gods, the dimension in which poets and wanderers are most at home. Whoever has visited the Otherworld becomes more than mortal... The realms of the Otherworld are of the ever-living, where everything is possible, where great deeds are accomplished..."
Hence, the Otherworld is the dwelling place of the Heroes, the Blessed ones whose qualities made them superior. It is AVALON, the "Apple Isle", a paradise across the sea, where the gods and heroes feed on apples of immortality.

A more chtonic aspect of the visible realm is the "Underworld", quite distinct from the Otherworld. This element of the Celtic cosmology is rooted in older native beliefs was not conceived of as a hell or place of punishment. It was the well of the primal forces of Life, before and after creation; the place where that which was not yet encountered that which was not anymore. It is the realm of the ancestors, exemplified by the ever turning wheel, the mill in which the gods of the underworld reside, in which the dead are remade, and initiates reborn.

The different world -visible and invisible- are not separated; there are bridges. Many gifts pass between mortals and the Otherworld folk: the power of healing, the power to sing, to make music or create poetry. The fairy mounds, or sidhes, are the homes of the Otherworld beings, still known in every Celtic country as the Little people: the brownies, the elves, the fairies, the corrigans, the goblins, the gnomes, etc.

The "outer" Samhain

Samhain inaugurated the Celtic year, but also the beginning of the season of cold, dearth, and darkness. At Samhain, beasts were rounded up and brought into stockades for wintering over, excess livestock was slaughtered since they could not be kept alive during the hard months of cold and dearth of grain (the herds would be driven out at Beltain). The slaughter took on a ritual and sacrificial aspect.

As the cold was intensifying, bonfires were lit. Their purpose was double: encourage the Sun as the Life-giver (sympathetic magic), and draw upon the elemental quality of fire, as an agent of purification. At Beltain bonfires, people jumped over them and cattle were driven through them; it was not only a way of getting rid of evil influences, but also of ridding the cattle of parasites.

Samhain was also a time of truce, with no fighting, violence, or divorce allowed. The Irish Fianna hunted and engaged in warfare from Beltain to Samhain, in the warm months, and lived out of the country from Samhain to Beltain.

At this moment of the year, accounts were closed, debts collected and contracts made.

As the boundaries between the realms faded away, it was the perfect time for divination and the reading of omens, such as placing two nuts in the fire for lovers -burning steadily denoted constancy while popping was inconstancy. It was a time for storytelling, poetry, singing, and playing tricks, evoking the ancestors and the glorious deeds of the heroes. Note that to the Celts, magic was not about "weird" or "occult" practices. It was only the invisible made visible as in the analogy of the tree seen in the seed. Needless to say, the Druids were the experts of this art and science, the ones who had a perfect knowledge and control of the complex forces of Nature.

The "inner" Samhain

Everything is twofold; everything bears an outer reality and embodies an inner dimension. This is also true for festivals. Beyond the common customs, festivals carried a very profound meaning. Their role was to allow the human being to evolve in a healthy way, that's to say integrating and harmonizing all the components of his nature. There are seasons to sow and seasons to harvest; seasons to shed forms and seasons to expand; seasons to die and seasons to spring again. The very same laws rule human consciousness. There are seasons for introspection and seasons for action; seasons to initiate projects and seasons to reap the fruits; seasons to die and seasons to be reborn. Ignoring these cycles of the human Psyche produces sickness -not only physical-, fragmented personalities, weariness, tiredness and dullness, so characteristic of our modern societies, which have broken the link to Nature and to the Sacredness of Life.

Halloween/Samhain cannot be understand without taking the aspect into consideration. There is an "exoteric" (outer) Samhain and an "esoteric" (inner) Samhain. The former was not only expressed through customs, and practices, but also through fears and superstitions. Samhain came to be considered as a dangerous time for mortals as fairies would take them and witches and evil powers were abroad and required propitiation. The latter was experienced at deeper levels by the ones who had prepared themselves. The festival night is honored by the Druids above all others because it is during this time that the veil separating this world from the Otherworld grows most thin, a time requiring careful control to overcome the fear it generates. The common-folk know much of this fear, but little of what is needed to master it.

Samhain celebrated the beginning of the year, opening a new cycle and closing another one. Hence, it is a time of Death and Rebirth, that's to say Recreation. The old forms need to dissolve and to be reorganized in a different way to allow a new and more complex order to be created. This phase of reorganization is the necessary Chaos preceding Cosmos (Order), the twilight preceding the day. Hence this aspect of Samhain, which makes this festival a Celtic equivalent of the Roman Saturnalia. Samhain was also a time of reversal of normal order, symbolized by such tricks as blocking up chimneys, leading off cattle, throwing cabbage to notable people. This "chaos" aspect allowed to externalize more irrational and darker sides of human nature, which are the primal forces that need to be integrated and transcended in order to allow a natural progression towards higher planes of consciousness.

In winter, Samhain inaugurates the cold season. Nature is dying, or so we perceive. In fact, death strikes only the visible world; the invisible keeps alive, as the reawakening of Nature will prove at Spring. As the "outer forms" fall down, the existence of the inner realm becomes more obvious. The cold season is a propitious time to relate to that which is important; a time for introspection and for shedding layers of superfluous aspects, a time to regroup the multiple facets of our personalities and experience Unity. The analogy with the rounding up of the cattle and the slaughtering of the excess livestock is quite powerful!

As the visible is dying, the contact with the invisible (the Eternal Spirit) is easier. Hence Samhain is the celebration of the Life which never dies. It's the time to harvest the fruits in the visible, and to keep the seeds (the invisible essence) to initiate a new cycle. The celebration of the never dying spirit is expressed in many ways at Samhain: Apples and nuts are associated with Samhain and Halloween, as symbols of Eternity and hidden Wisdom. The Apple is the fruit of the Otherworld growing in Avalon. When cut crosswise, the apple displays five seeds embedded within a five-branch star, symbol of the Welsh Sow Goddess Cerridwen (the Morrigu) and of the spiritual quintessence (fifth essence). The apple then came to be known as the "fruit of the Gods". Apples and nuts are also found on the "silver branch" carried by the poets, or fili, since poets draw their inspiration from the ever fertile Otherworld. Another reminder of Eternity at the door of the dark season was the mistletoe. The sacred mistletoe grows upon the oak, drawing its life force from the essence of the King of the trees. At Samhain, a sheaf of corn, a branch of evergreen or mistletoe symbolically carried on the dying powers of vegetation. Carrying or decorating with evergreens demonstrates that life has not died.

Fire was another important element of Samhain. It is also related to Spirit as the Eternal source of Life. The hearth had to be swept clean and a fire kept burning.

Because of its Death-Life double aspect, Samhain was under the influence of Goddesses as the Cailleach, Cerridwen (the Morrighan) and Dana. These are key elements in the understanding of the symbolism of Samhain, also of Halloween, since these deities are the very ancestors of our modern ugly witch. As Caitlin Matthews explains:
"One of the oldest deities, perhaps a truly native goddess of Britain and Ireland who was incorporated into the Celtic tradition is the Cailleach or the Old One... About her are found fragmentary stories concerning the control of the weather and the formation of mountain ranges. She is the Mountain Mother of native tradition who was submerged in Celtic story, occasionally appearing as a helper or a hinderer of the hero. Like the British Cerridwen, she guards a cauldron into which the heroes are thrust to be healed and hardened. She sometimes appears in the aspect of the Dark Woman of Knowledge, disguised as an ugly young woman who nevertheless possesses great wisdom. The fragmentary myths which remain embedded in Celtic folklore speak of her pursuit of the Hero, who is often her own son. By harrying the hero, she forces him to grow and develop wisdom... The Morrighan draws directly on the Cailleach's character... As territorial ancestress of the land. She proclaims peace, but she does not cease prophesying, going on to foretell a world in which the natural order is overtaken by unnatural disaster. Her prophetic voice echoes long down to our own times, for the Cailleach is both the giver and the taker of life and she outlives the ending of the world by renewing it within herself"
The witch (which is derived from the Saxon word 'wica', the wise one) allows growth in wisdom by putting human beings in the face of their fears, limitations, and demons. Hence her role in INITIATION: by making the "dragons" come out -catharsis effect- they give way to the heroic fight leading from one level of consciousness to another. Growing in wisdom is dying to a degree of ignorance and being reborn to a higher level of freedom.

These deities related at the same time to Death and Life (renewal) show how rich was the Celtic view of Life and the World, as the Celts knew to welcome and integrate the "night forces", along with the "day forces". Today's witches (the ones displayed at Halloween) have become the image of exclusively evil and negative aspects. However, we have forgotten that they are also the messengers of wisdom. A paradoxical marriage difficult to grasp by the dualistic modern mind.

Symbols

If there is a Halloween symbol that conveys much of the meaning of Samhain, it is the pumpkin. Because of its rounded shape that evokes the sun and the apples, the pumpkin represents eternal life. The multitude of seeds it embodies makes it a symbol of the perpetuation of life through the many cycles in the visible world. On Halloween, huge pumpkins were being hollow, carve faces on them and put candles inside (a tradition borrowed from Scottish and Irish people who used to carve huge turnips). To the Celts, the head is the seat, thus the symbol of the Spiritual powers. With the lit candle, the head of jack-o'-lantern represents the immortal spirit that overcomes darkness and chaos. The orange color, so characteristic of Halloween, is a good reminder of the paradoxical union between the Earth (red) and the Sky (yellow); the chtonic forces and the spiritual forces. Finally, the hollowing of the pumpkin is a reminiscence of the magic cauldron of the Cailleach, which contains the primal forces of metamorphosis.

Halloween is actually much more than just ghostly or horror stories or movies. It is an invitation to the heroic journey towards Eternity.
